Student Teacher - Don't Fall in to This Trap

So you are a student teacher in teacher's college. There are so many new ideas presented to you with how to create effective lesson plans, classroom management, and portfolio making. All of this is to prepare you for the big interviews, and ultimately for your job. The problem is that at this time, many student teachers are not getting jobs as easily as they once were, and some are not getting jobs at all.

Currently the job market is saturated with teachers, especially if you are an elementary teacher. Most teachers are stuck taking temporary positions or supply teaching for months or several years until they finally get a full time position. As a student teacher, you might be lucky enough to do some supply teaching and get paid as an 'unqualified teacher' for a while until your papers come in that say you are qualified.

As a student teacher you really need to make sure you have a plan to make money if you do not land that full time teaching job right away, or if you are only a temporary teacher, or if you are doing occasional supply work. If you are not full time, you will not be paid over any vacation periods, and if you supply teach you need to make calculate roughly how much you will make a month, so you know how much to supplement this income.

Sure you could go out and get another job, but with occasional teaching it is sometimes hard to fit a new job (with it's set hours) in to your teaching schedule. This is why it is so important to have a plan, where you can make money either while you are teaching in the classroom, or while you are at home.

The Internet has made it extremely profitable for us as teachers to make money Online. As a student teacher, you need to briefly take your mind away from curriculum documents and do some research into concepts like leverage and residual income. For these two concepts are really going to change the way you think about making money. And, once you finally do land a teaching job, these concepts are also going to separate you from the rest of your colleagues who are chained to their budgets.

When and how to correct has always been one of the dilemmas for teachers, especially associated with language teaching. Whether it’s a verbal concern or a written, the level of controversy is about equal. The main reason for this controversy is the different dimensions students and teachers think in.

Error correction also varies from subject to subject and the strategies largely depend on age groups and academic level, but the essence of it remains almost same in all ages, academic levels and subjects, i.e. taking the individuals towards maximum perfection. Here’re some general tips that can help teachers to make the error correction process working at its best for them:

• Error correction is the most powerful tool for bringing up the best but motivation is also at risk, if the error correction rules are too stringent. The most important thing to focus in this context is the identification of dimensions, i.e. you’re considering fluency or accuracy. The former is much involved in spoken concerns, while later in written. Identification of dimension clears a way to correct the errors that doesn’t lessen the level of motivation in students. So prepare more and more written activities, if accuracy is the matter else spoken activities.

• The next important concern after identifying dimensions is to ensure the error correction in minimum possible time, for students may get used to a mistake if they have been repeating it for a long time, and prolonged practice of a mistake makes it a habit. ‘Spot correction’ is considered to be the best choice, so plan the activities that have maximum possibility of spot correction.

• In higher grades, teachers can rely on either self-correction or peer-correction that helps motivating the students as well. For self-correction, teachers can outline some mistakes and let students know about them. Whenever a student has a slip, he himself can come back to the exact track. The peer-correction works while letting students to review each other’s work (they’re aware of the mistakes here as well).

• Find new mistakes that your students make, number of new mistakes represent the level of their exploration.

• Whatever the way you use for error correction, make sure that it should sound a positive experience for the individual and he should have the feeling that he learned form it rather than he was pointed out.

10 Steps To Developing A Quality Lesson Plan:

1. The first thing to consider, obviously, is what you want to teach.

Communication between parents and teachers is essential to the success of the students. Often, the only time communication takes place is at parent-teacher conferences. For that reason, it is essential that teachers learn to effectively manage parent-teacher conferences in order to obtain the most benefit from the communication that occurs.

The following tips allow teachers to take a proactive approach to parent-teacher conferences, helping to create effective communication during the conference:

Prepare - Preparing for a parent-teacher conference means knowing exactly what goals have been established for the class, and each individual student, and being ready to show parents how their student is performing toward those goals. For each student, be prepared to show work samples and test scores. In addition, be ready to share behavioral anecdotes for that child. A story can help convey behavioral issues without stating them explicitly, helping to keep parents from becoming defensive. While showing the grade book is an option, it must be done in a way that prevents parents from viewing the grades of other students.

Environment - Create an environment that is comfortable for the parents. Placing parents in smaller chairs than the teacher, or facing the teacher across the teacher's desk, places the teacher in a controlling position that can cause parents to feel intimidated or defensive. Instead, place them in equal seating, perhaps across a table, to establish a sense of equality. Ensure privacy for the conference so parents do not feel as though others can hear what is being said about their child. Organize paperwork so it is easily accessible but out of the way during the conference.

Professionalism - Preparation and proper environment are two aspects of professionalism. Dress and manner of speech fall into this category also. Parents judge a teacher's competence by the amount of professionalism, or lack thereof, that they see displayed. Teachers who want to be viewed as competent professionals should project that image throughout the parent-teacher conference.

Rapport - Teachers should begin the parent-teacher conference by attempting to establish a connection with the parents. Greeting parents warmly, welcoming them to the classroom, and engaging in brief small talk all help to establish rapport. Teachers should also encourage parents to discuss their views and/or concerns about their children. Doing so demonstrates genuine concern for the child, which helps get parents more involved in their child's education.

Communication - Not only should communication at the parent-teacher conference be positive, it should also be clear and specific. When discussing behavior issues, teachers should focus on specific actions, including duration and frequency, rather than offering general comments. Teachers should communicate clearly about all positives and negatives of the student's behavior and performance. Clear, specific statements leave less room for interpretation, which leaves less room for argument by the parents. Communication should also include positive statements, making it clear that the student is a person of value, rather than including only the negatives about the child's behavior and performance in class. Even the negatives can be phrased in such a way that the statement is positive and does not create the need to place blame.
