Wedding Reception Tips

Tips For Planning A Great Wedding Reception
By Gabriel Adams

A wedding reception is the party that is held after a wedding
ceremony. These parties have become very important parts to any
wedding. They allow members of each family to get together and
converse with one another.

To make your wedding even more memorable you should plan a good
wedding reception. The most important thing to have for any
reception is to have the right kind of atmosphere. Get some
nice round tables and position them equally around a large
room. This will allow each guest to be seated equally from each
other and allow them to walk around and greet other guests
without too much of a hassle.

When seating the bride, groom, and their families you can use
raised square tables that allow them to take an "honor
position." It is after all their big day and they should be
remembered in it. This also allows anyone who wants to greet
them to be able to line past them, shake hands, and give
congratulations.

You should also consider having some food available in your
reception. Having a well catered meal and a nice serving of
drinks, alcoholic and nonalcoholic will make everyone happy. If
you don't want to go with a full meal you should at least
considerer serving some hors d'oeuvres.

Another thing that should be considered is music. This helps
lighten the mood and gives people something to concentrate on
when not in conversation. Good music can help set the theme of
the whole night.

Lastly a fun and exciting thing to do is to get pictures and
videos of the bride and grooms life and put them together in a
video. This allows guests to get a glimpse into the former
lives of the bride and groom. It also allows the couple to see
what they were and to make their new lives something better,
together.

Whatever you decide to do when planning a reception always make
sure the bride and groom approves the designs. It is their big
day and things should go according to what they want.

HSBC Colombo Fashion Week, informally labeled as South Asia’s only international fashion week begins its final countdown to another edition. The most awaited and highly anticipated event is scheduled to take place on 4,5 and 6 February 2011 at the Hilton Grand Ballroom.

This year’s event will feature 22 Sri Lankan fashion designers and labels alongside 12 reputed international designers.

HSBC Colombo Fashion Week is a not-for-profit event that is committed to uplifting Sri Lanka’s fashion design industry. It aims at guiding and incubating young and potential designers and creates retail and marketing opportunities for established and new designers by providing a platform to interact with reputed international designers, media and independent retail buyers.

This initiative also deals with the related fields of local fashion retail, crafts and workshops, like Batik, Beeralu and weaver communities.

“Every year we give ourselves bigger objectives and then work through the year to achieve them, this helps us maintain direction to take the Sri Lankan fashion design industry on to a bigger platform. We want Sri Lankan fashion designers to be commercially successful, showcasing in international fashion weeks, retailing in international markets and have a successful local retail network in Sri Lanka. We are not very far from that.” Says Ajaiy Virr Singh, President, Colombo Fashion Week.
In 2010, HSBC Colombo Fashion Week’s MOUs with 5 international fashion weeks; namely Miami Fashion Week, Russia Fashion Week, Malaysia Fashion Week, Dubai Fashion Festival and Pakistan Fashion Week, went into implementation. As a result, a few selected Sri Lankan designers got the opportunity to showcase their collections at these prestigious events. Kanchana and Fouzal Hameed were two of the lucky recipients of this initiative.

HSBC, the title sponsor of the event has been associated with Colombo Fashion Week since 2008 for the fourth year running.

We look forward to another successful event and hope the local fashion industry will be taken to greater heights with opportunity given to new as well as existing designers.”

Titled FASHION ETHICAL, to be launched on the second day of the HSBC Colombo Fashion Week, is a collaborative effort of ethical representation from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Malaysia. Sri Lanka will be the hub for Fashion Ethical, which will then create a platform for other countries in the region to follow suit, with India being the next destination.

The Hindu Wedding

The Hindu Wedding Significance
The Hindu marriage symbolizes the physical and especially the spiritual union of man and woman. The rituals of the Hindu marriage ceremony, highlight the interdependence and the complementary nature of man and wife relationship. The maathorupahan or Arthanareeswarar, the half male half female representation of Shiva and Shakthi, in Hindu cosmogony emphasizes this ideal of man and wife relationship in such union.

Venerated even as Shiva and Shakthi, the bride and groom sit elevated in a space the priest sanctifies for divine intervention in the solemnization. The priest and guests traditionally sit on the floor as equals with the idols of divinity. As tradition would have it, all events related to the wedding are usually on a day and at a time rendered auspicious by planetary positions.

Nitchaya Thampoolam - Hindu Engagement
Though Hindu marriages are traditionally arranged, marriage by consent, the bride and groom choosing one another, is also a trend. Nitchaya thampoolam which follows the choice is the Hindu engagement. Thampoolam or Vetrilai (betel leaf) and its complement Paakku (betel nut) are ceremoniously exchanged with other gifts at the bride's residence announcing the betrothal.

Ponn Urukku - Gold Melting Ceremony
A significant occasion a few weeks beofre the wedding is the Ponn Urukku ceremony attended by parents and the elders at which the groom presents a gold coin to the family goldsmith for its ritual meltdown to fashion the Thaali - the bridal pendant.

Maapillai Alaippu- Conducting Groom to the Hall
At the appointed time on the wedding day, the Tholan the best man), the bride's brother, with a following of relatives made up of wedded pairs, sets off for the groom's house. There, he places the thalaipa (turban) on the groom's head and escorts him to the wedding hall accompanied by the groom's family, relatives and friends.

Maapillai Varavetpu - Welcoming the Groom
The wedding commences with the arrival of the groom and his retinue at the wedding hall. the Tholi (the bride's maid), the groom's married sister, bears the Koorai (the bridal saree) and the Thaali. at the entrance to the wedding hall, which represents the bride's residence, her parents welcome the groom with the flower garland.

The Tholan wets the groom's feet with the Chempu (a bronze vessel) of water, a gesture lavished on an honoured guest, and he in in return rewarded with a gold ring for his good grace. Two ladies representing the bide and the groom perform Aarathi to ward off the evil eye with banana-wick lamps on a tray. Thereafter, to the accompaniment of Nathswaram ( a wind instrument) and Thavil ( a percussion instrument) the Tholan and the bride's parents lead the groom to the Manavarai, the flower festooned nuptial seat, where the priest awaits to perform the ceremony.

The Poruwa Siritha-Sri lanka wedding

The Poruwa Siritha (Poruwa Ceremony) appears to have existed in Sri Lanka before the introduction of Buddhism in the 3rd Century B.C.

Through the ages, many innovations have been introduced to the Poruwa Siritha. By and large, the men and women of present day society realize the value of their heritage and are motivated to protect and preserve something of their past for posterity.

The Poruwa Siritha was as valid custom as a registered marriage until the British introduced the registration of marriages by Law in 1870. Today's Poruwa Ceremony has been influenced by both upcountry and low country customs of Sri Lanka.

The bridegroom and party assemble on the left of the Poruwa and the bridal party on the right. The bride and groom enter the Poruwa leading with the right foot. They greet each other with palms held together in the traditional manner.

Shilpadhipathi (master of ceremonies) presents a hand of betel leaves to the couple, which they accept and jand back to him to be placed on a height of the Poruwa. This symbolises the offering of betel to gods. The bride's father places the right hand of the bride on that of the groom as a symbolic gesture of handing over the bride to the bridegroom.

The groom's brother hands a tray to the groom with seven sheaves of betel leaves with a coin placed in each. The groom holds the tray while the bride takes one sheaf at a time and drops it on the Poruwa. The groom repeats this process. This is a custom carried out to remember seven generations of relatives on each side.

The groom's brother hands a chain to the groom who in turn places it on the bride's neck.

The bride's maternal uncle enters the Poruwa, ties the small fingers of the bride and groom with a gold thread and then pours water over the fingers. Water and earth being the eternal verities, the water so poured and the earth on which it falls are intended to be the lasting witnesses to the marriage. The uncle then turns the couple clockwise, three times, on the Poruwa.

Next the groom presents to his bride a white cloth which in turn is presented to the bride's mother. This is an expression of the groom's gratitude to his mother-in-law for bringing up his bride.

Next, the groom's mother will present the going away saree to the groom. The groom hands it over to the bride and she in turn gives it to her mother.

The bride's mother will then present a plate of milk rice and kavum, cooked with special ingredients befitting a marriage ceremony, to the bride who feeds a piece of each to the bridegroom. The bridegroom feeds the bride in return.

As the newly weds step down from the Poruwa, helped by a couple from the bridegroom's party, Shilpathipathi breaks a coconut in two.

The bridal couple lights a brass oil lamp to signify their resolve to keep the home fires burning.
