It’s hip to be square if you happen to be the Nokia X5. It plugs part of the gap between the Nokia X3 and Nokia X6, and it certainly does it in style. Like a summer festival or X Factor contestant out to impress Simon Cowell, Nokia's X series is all about the music. The X2 is the latest in the line-up, rocking a candybar design and straightforward numerical keypad, as well as dedicated hard keys for quickly accessing the aural delights stashed inside. You can pick it up for £109 SIM-free, pay £89.99 for it on pay as you go, or land it for just £10 a month on a two-year Vodafone contract.
Sound of music

The Nokia X series was born out of the ashes of the XpressMusic line, and the X2 is the phone that most resembles a blower from that old-school range. From its candybar form to its hard music keys and uninspiring colour schemes, it's hard to tell this phone is a member of the newer X series clan.

In the age of the touchscreen, the hard keys down the side of the X2's handset look a little dated.

But that it most certainly is. The key focus here, as with all X series cells, is music. While there's no internal storage to write home about (a mere 48MB to be precise), there's microSD support for cards up to 16GB, meaning the X2 can handle around 4,000 average MP3s. The music software itself is no different to that on any other device running Symbian S40. Navigating albums, playlists and artists is breezy and the wide format support, which includes AAC and WMA, means you can load the X2 up with tracks from iTunes as well as other download stores.

What's meant to set the X2, and other X series phones, apart from their Nokia siblings are the dedicated music keys, which sit flush down the left-hand side of the device. It has to be said that it's not the easiest task to figure out which button does what, just by looking at them at least. The middle key handles play/pause, while the top button skips tracks forward and the bottom ones pushes tracks back. They're definitely handy if you just want to slip through tunes while tapping out a text or zipping round the Web, but using the standard navigation button to get around tracks when in the music player itself is much easier. If anything, the hard keys feels like a regression from the older XpressMusic phones. They were much more obvious and sat on much slimmer, sleeker devices.
Interface quirks

By and large, the Symbian S40 user interface is implemented well on the X2. There's direct access to a (rather average) Facebook app, as well as the chance to dive straight into the radio and music player apps. Pleasingly, Ovi Store is available from the front page, too, bringing a slew of cool add-ons to the bargain end of the market. That certainly adds to the X2's appeal and makes it a phone well worth investigating for app-savvy but budget-conscious punters.

Accessing the main menu is a tad awkward, however, requiring you to find your way to the top of the front page's menu before hitting the central nav key. It's a quirk suffered by all S40 phones and really does prove infuriating after repeated trips into the wrong menu system. The home screen is crammed with goodies, but it certainly feels cramped at times. This is more the fault of Symbian than the X2, although the low-resolution 320x240-pixel, 56mm (2.2-inch) screen could be a smidge brighter. It doesn't render icons particularly well.
Decent design

The X2 isn't spectacular but, for a plasticky phone, it does feel remarkably solid. It certainly feels thicker than its 13.3mm, but the tapered edges and rounded back mean it sits well in the hand. Likewise, the numerical keyboard feels secure despite the buttons sitting flush with the device, which is normally a recipe for disaster. They keypad is not quite the same standard as those on the ace C series, but we found getting up to speed with it took a matter of minutes.

The X2's camera is a real stand-out, especially when you take into account the price. At 5 megapixels and with an LED flash, it's every bit as classy as similarly priced, low-end Android efforts such as the HTC Wildfire. It takes crisp and clean shots, even in low light, and although there aren't any varying shooting modes (other than changing colours and tints), it's ideal for taking quick shots for shoving straight onto Facebook or Twitter.

One major letdown, however, is the lack of 3G. This doesn't impact so much on email performance, but it means getting online is akin to using the Web way back in 1999: sluggish and utterly infuriating. Why Nokia insists on dropping this vital technology while loading up Web-reliant services such as Ovi remains a mystery.
Conclusion

The Nokia X2 is a serviceable handset with plenty to recommend. It certainly won't leave an iPhone-sized dent in your bank balance, either. On the flip side, Symbian S40 is an acquired taste and the failure to include 3G is hard to overlook.

The Nokia X3 is a slim, budget offering from the Finns. With no touchscreen and modest memory, it still has pretensions of being an attractive music device with a low cost to boot.

While the recent Nokia X6 touchscreen topped the rebranded X-series music phone bill with smartphone functionality and a heavyweight 32GB of onboard memory, the Nokia X3 is a much more modest affair.

It works the signature Nokia XpressMusic design look again, sporting bright red or blue music player controls down the side of the display, and comes with a 2GB MicroSD memory card in-box, a standard 3.5mm headphone socket, in-ear earphones and an FM radio.

However, there's no high-speed 3G connectivity, let alone Wi-Fi or GPS functionality, and its onboard camera is an average 3.2MP shooter.


Initially available for around £90 with various pay as you go deals (or £129 SIM-free), the Nokia X3 is clearly aiming for the cash-conscious music phone buyer after a smart-looking device, pitching it squarely against the likes of the Sony Ericsson W395.

Design and handling

The Nokia X3's bodywork is tidily proportioned, measuring 96(h) x 49.3(w) x 14.1(d) mm closed and weighing 103g.

It has an average-sized 2.2-inch 262K-colour QVGA display dominating the front that's reasonable for this sort of handset.

There are no touchscreen controls – under the display is a regular navigation D-pad flanked by a standard issue quartet of soft key and call end buttons on a flat glossy black front control panel.

These buttons are adequately spaced for hassle- and error-free navigation, although the glossy front is a touch plasticky.

But the metallic red or blue music controls and trim bordering the display and the matt black bodywork used around the rest of the phone add a sharp look to the design – not HTC Legend levels of design, but not bad for 90 of your English pounds.

These three thin music control buttons (forward, rewind, play/pause) enable users to operate the music player when it's playing in the background, although they're aren't essential for controlling the phone - the navigation D-pad can take care of that too.

The slide-out keyboard is a bit of a throwback to Motorola RAZR styling, with a flat brushed metal pad separated by illuminated ridges. It's sufficient for texting at decent speeds, though it doesn't have the super-light touch of the best texting phones, and larger-fingered users should be wary of straying thumbs.

Around the sides are routine camera key and volume buttons plus a MicroSD card slot, covered by a fairly tight plastic bung.

The standard 3.5mm headphone socket sits correctly on top of the phone, next to a microUSB data connector and thin-pin charger socket.

All-in-all, it feels slim in the hand and pocket, and is comfortable to handle – what more do you really expect from a £90 handset? LG is doing the same thing with the LG Pop – so we're glad to see Nokia is playing in the right area as well.

Nokia X6 Mobile Phone

The Nokia x6 has an expected release date in the 4th quarter of 2009.It is being released along with its smaller sister the Nokia x3.Both these phones look to pioneer a new series of nokia phones. It appears that the x series of phones is a development on the xpressmusic series and will be looking to taking over the mantel. The nokia x6 is a nice step up from the existing nokia 5800 xpressmusic.

Sleeker in design than the 5800, the Nokia x6 has modified one of the weaknesss of the 5800 and upgraded the in built camera to a 5 megapixel camera. However the display screen is still very similar being 3.2” 640x360 pixel display.

When purchasing the Nokia x6 you can choose to have the normal version or the “comes with music” version allowing you unlimited music downloads.

The Nokia x6 comes with 32GB of non-expandable memory, several software updates for better social networking sites and of course the upgraded camera. Apart from these upgrades though there is not so much difference between the Nokia x6 and the 5800.The Nokia x6 however is a much sleeker, nicer looking phone.
The Nokia X6 is a 3G phone with tri-band UMTS and support for HSDPA downloads at a maximum of 6 mbps and is being promoted by nokia as a media player, being able to cope with almost all major video and audio formats. There is a tv out port and you have playback through Bluetooth stereo or the phones own speakers. And as pretty standard on most new phones today there is an FM radio.

The web browser comes with Flash Lite support and the email client supports Microsoft Exchange and standard protocols. The Nokia x6 is an S60 smart phone which does mean that new applications can be added in the future, however there are many applications already preloaded including a version of sporeAvailable in Black/Red and White/Blue combinations we feel that the Nokia x6 is an improvement on the 5800.We like its style and handability. The price tag might be a little too expensive for some, diverting them to maybe purchase the Nokia x3.With being released before Christmas this phone is sure to be very popular ending up in many a persons Christmas stocking on Christmas day.
So here we go again. Yet another release in the ever evolving mobile phone market. The thing is with mobile phones it seems that no sooner have you made a purchase then your handset is outdated both in technology and looks.
But the new technology of touch screen we feel is stay around for quite a while. Touch screen is the natural progression to the contemporary button handsets and we suppose one day will completely replace them. And for this reason that is why we think Nokia has put so much time and effort into designing the Nokia x6.
We don’t know your opinions on how Nokia has been for the last couple of years but to us we reckon they kind of lost the plot. They were releasing new handsets every other week it appeared with none of the releases being above average or spectacular in any way. The competition in the mobile phone market is intense to say the least. Ten years ago Nokia were easily top of the tree outselling any competitor with their style and technology. You should never judge a book by it’s cover but it seems that appearance does indeed have a huge impact at least with mobile phones. Ten years ago Ericsson was a competitor to Nokia and they did have better technology at hand in their phones.
However the design of their handsets appeared to let them down as their sales fell well below that of Nokia. The Nokia phones always looked more advanced and sleek whereas the Ericsson’s kind of looked like small bricks. The theory of appearance playing a great part in mobile phone success is supported hugely by the joining of forces of Sony and Ericsson. The Sony designers came out with beautiful looking handsets and filled with the Ericsson technology they became an instant success with millions of sales. Nokia was no longer at the forefront. Their mediocre designs were not making much of an impression and their fall in sales only helped the Sony Ericsson combination further.

It’s taken Nokia a while to comprehend this and with the Nokia x6 it seems they have finally woken up and decided to do something about it. Now whether this is because of a change in personal in their design department or whether management have gone back to basics we are not sure. However there are no complaints here as it’s only the consumer who will benefit and what benefit’s the consumer has with the new Nokia X6!! You only have to look and touch the Nokia x6 to realise that Nokia still has the magic to making excellent mobile phones. Let’s hope they continue in this mode and hit the heights they deserve.

Nokia X6 Mobile Phone Review

iPhone

As expected, the latest handset features a high-resolution display, a faster processor, and video calling, but it also sports unexpected additions like a new antenna and a gyroscope. It will be available exclusively with AT&T starting June 24. The price with service is fair--$199 for the 16GB phone or $299 for the 32GB device--and both models come in white and black versions. No, we did not hear a peep about the elusive Verizon iPhone, but we didn't anticipate any news on that front.

Design

The new iPhone's design is a sharp departure from the previous iPhone models. The front and back sides are glass, both surfaces are flat, and a stainless steel border circles the entire phone. Indeed, it looks very much like the photos that appeared on Gizmodo after an Apple engineer allegedly lost it in a Redwood City, Calif., bar back in April. Other new design elements include the aforementioned front-facing camera, split volume controls, two noise-cancellation microphones, and a new LED flash with the main camera lens. The iPhone 4 also switches to a Micro-SIM format, just like the iPad.

We welcome the new design elements on a couple of levels. The flat backside means that the iPhone will no longer wobble when it's resting on a table. Also, even though the overall effect is a tad boxy, the handset has a clean and unmistakeably Apple look. At 0.37 inch (9.3mm), the iPhone 4 also is 25 percent thinner than its predecessors. Jobs called it the thinnest smartphone around, but since that race changes daily, it may not hold the title for long.

We also have a small concern about all that glass. It is shiny and beautiful, but the glass attracts smudges by the ton and durability remains a concern. Jobs said that glass better resists scratches, but we hope that the iPhone 4 will take a few drops to the floor without cracking. On the upside, it feels solid in the hand.

Display

Apple has a unique talent for making us want something we never knew we wanted. The iPhone 4 features a 940x640-pixel (or 300 pixels per square inch) "Retina Display," which is four times the resolution of previous iPhone models. What's more, it uses the same IPS display that's found on the iPad with an 800:1 contrast ratio. Though we've always thought highly of the current iPhone displays, perhaps Apple wanted to respond to the gorgeous screens we've seen on phones like the HTC Evo 4G.

In our brief hands-on, the display is clearer than crystal clear (Brian Tong's words). Since it renders all text the same, we had no problems reading screens from a variety of sources. Photos looked especially lovely, particularly when you compare the same image between an iPhone 4G and an iPhone 3GS.

iMovie and iBooks

iMovie brings movie-editing capabilities to the iPhone. You'll pay $4.99 for the app, but it's a nice touch. iBooks also adds some nifty new features. You can make notes on pages of books, view PDF files, and sync purchases between your iPhone and iPad.

Of the world's largest phone manufacturers, perhaps none has taken a more twisted road to smartphone ubiquity than Sony Ericsson. It began its journey back in the pre-joint venture Ericsson days by throwing its weight behind Symbian, a smartphone platform that would ultimately become the world's most popular -- but it made a fatal error in supporting the doomed UIQ flavor that never saw even a fraction of the support its S60 cousin did. UIQ's untimely (but predicted) collapse last year left the company nearly rudderless and ill-equipped to deal with competitors like Nokia, HTC, and Apple, all of whom had long since embraced other platforms -- all with fighting chances of market dominance.

Left without a platform to champion, Sony Ericsson would ultimately continue supporting Symbian through its involvement with the Symbian Foundation and phones like the Satio and Vivaz... and it would ramp up support for Windows Mobile with the Xperia X1 and X2... and it would bring Android into the fold with the X10, all within a few months of each other. All told, Sony Ericsson enters 2010 actively supporting three unrelated smartphone platforms, and comments by CEO Bert Norberg at MWC in February lead us to believe that they'd be happy to take on a fourth (or more) if the opportunity presented itself. It's an odd strategy to be sure, particularly for a company that's struggling mightily and shrinking its workforce more than any other top-five manufacturer. How it intends to effectively compete on three different fronts without spreading itself hopelessly thin, well... that remains a huge question mark.

That said, the Xperia X10 is perhaps the most promising of Sony Ericsson's confusing crop of modern smartphones, combining attractive hardware with killer specs, Android, and an intriguing custom skin. Does it hold its own against modern competitors like HTC's Nexus One and Desire? And more importantly, can it keep Sony Ericsson from going over the brink? Read on to find out.

Note: Sony Ericsson contacted us shortly after the review was published to let us know that this particular X10 is running pre-production firmware, which may account for some of the issues we had with keyboard performance and occasional sluggishness. Let's hope!
