side effects of birth control pills

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with birth control pills (oral contraceptives); however, not everyone who uses birth control pills will experience side effects. In fact, most women tolerate them quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider. Some types of birth control pills may be more or less likely to cause certain side effects than others.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with birth control pills. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of birth control pill side effects with you.)

Common Side Effects of Birth Control Pills
In clinical studies for most medications, one group of people is given the actual medication, while another group is given a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). The side effects in both groups are carefully documented and compared. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine. However, it is not possible to use a placebo in clinical trials for birth control pills, as this would lead to many unintentional pregnancies.

It is difficult to obtain much information about side effects from studies that do not use a placebo. Because there is no way of knowing if any particular problem is actually a side effect of the medication, only vague information is available about side effects of birth control pills. The prescribing information for all birth control pills simply lists side effects seen with birth control pills in general, instead of side effects for a specific product. Specific side effect information, such as how frequently they occur, is not provided.

Based on information available, some of the common birth control pill side effects include but are not limited to:

* Acne, although birth control pills can also improve acne (see Birth Control Pills and Acne)
* Breast tenderness and enlargement
* Breakthrough bleeding and spotting between periods
* Nausea and vomiting
* Changes in your eyes that make it more difficult to wear contact lenses
* Bloating
* Headaches
* Changes in sex drive (typically a decrease).

Women are often concerned about weight gain due to birth control pills, but recent research suggests that birth control pills do not cause weight gain for most women

Ayurvedic body massage

What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda means "the Science of Life." It is the traditional natural healing system of India, having been practiced there for over 6000 years. It was established by the same enlightened sages who composed the Vedas, India's ancient spiritual texts.
Its purpose is to provide a framework of health for the whole person: body, mind and spirit. As such, it deals not only with disease, but also with rejuvenation, virilization and longevity.

The main tools Ayurveda utilizes to achieve health are diet, lifestyle, herbs and bodywork, although it also possesses a sophisticated branch of surgery.

Chief among Ayurveda's outstanding attributes is its recognition of the uniqueness of each individual, thereby allowing treatment to be tailored to that individual and their environment. For those wishing to learn more about Ayurveda, the are a number of excellent books and courses available. We especially recommend the books of Drs. Vasant Lad, Robert Svoboda and David Frawley.
What is Ayurvedic Oil Therapy?
Ayurvedic Oil Therapy

"Oil is specific for Vata (wind) disorders. As these constitute the majority of diseases, oil therapy is essential for most forms of treatment. It is indicated in diseases of the nervous system, bones and the deeper tissues. It is useful for the other doshas as well." - Dr. David Frawley, "Ayurvedic Healing.

Called "Abhyanga," oil massage has for thousands of years played an important role in Ayurvedic health care. Beyond the obvious benefits of moisturizing and nourishing the skin, oils transmit their own qualities to the body on a deep physiological and psychological level.

The unctuousness of oil serves as an antidote to many of the scourges of modern life, such as overindulgence, addictions, irregularity, constant travel, stress and loneliness. It benefits the very young and the very old, the undernourished and the over-worked.

In addition, oil massage serves as a vehicle for the subtle powers of herbs, bypassing the digestive system and transporting their properties deep within the tissues.

As an indispensable preliminary to the Ayurvedic purification therapy known as Panchakarma, Abhyanga helps loosen and relocate imbalances so that they can be easily removed from the system.

Shirodhara and Pizichil are ancient and unique Ayurvedic therapies that are now gaining popularity in deluxe spas and health resorts worldwide, both by virtue of their effectiveness and their sensation of utter luxury.

In Shirodhara, warm oil is continuously and rhythmically poured on the forehead, while in Pizichil the treatment is expanded to the entire body. Shirodhara alleviates excess Vata, mental stress and nervous tension, enhances circulation in the brain, improves memory, nourishes the hair, provides sound sleep and calms the body and mind.
Even without access to a Spa, the benefits of Ayurvedic Oil Therapy can be enjoyed. Many health conscious people are making self-massage part of their daily routine. Often this is performed in the morning upon rising. An appropriate oil is selected, then heated to slightly warmer than body temperature. It can be applied to the entire body, or to specific areas of attention. Strokes should be towards the poles of the body and circular at the joints. The oil can either be left on or washed off, after being allowed some time to absorb into the body. A steam treatment or hot bath following the Abhyanga will magnify its effects, although in some cases heat treatment may be contra-indicated.

How To Care Dry Skin

Dry skin most often occurs on the shins, hands and sides of the abdomen. It is more common during the winter months, when humidity is low. Some people also have a genetic, or hereditary, tendency to develop dry skin. In addition, elderly people tend to have more trouble with dry skin due to the natural changes in skin that occur with age.

Treatment is important because extensively dry skin can lead to dermatitis, a more severe inflammation of the skin.

Dry skin may be prevented or treated by:

* Taking lukewarm baths or showers (instead of hot ones)
* Limiting baths/showers to 5 to 10 minutes
* Applying a moisturizer right after drying off from a shower or washing your hands
* Using a moisturizing body soap and hand soap
* Using heavier creams or ointments during the winter months and lighter lotions in the summer

How do I know if I have dermatitis?

Dry skin is defined as flaking or scaling—which may or may not be itchy—when there is no evidence of dermatitis, or inflammation, of the skin. Some flaking along with redness, however, may be a sign of an underlying dermatitis. There are different types of dermatitis that may cause dry, itchy, flaking skin.

They include:

* Seborrheic dermatitis. This type involves a red, scaly, itchy rash on various areas of the body, particularly those areas that contain many oil glands. Seborrheic dermatitis can occur as scaling on the scalp, eyebrows and sides of the nose.
* Allergic contact dermatitis. This occurs when the skin comes into contact with a substance that causes an immune reaction, such as poison ivy. Allergic contact dermatitis of the hands often causes scaling on the fingers.
* Atopic dermatitis. Also known as eczema, this is a long-lasting type of dermatitis that often runs in families. It also may cause excessively dry, itchy skin.
* Athlete's foot. In many cases, athlete's foot, a fungal infection, shows up as dry flaking on the soles of the feet.

Natural Nails Tips

Tips to Keep Your Nails Strong and Sexy

by Kathryn D'Imperio

When you write down your shopping list, as you punch a phone number into your cell, while you wash dishes, do the ironing, clean the windows, or do one hundred other things that women do on any given day do you take notice of the condition of your nails?

Our hands are such an integral part of our daily lives, and constantly, we risk their health and strength, often without even noticing, because of the hustle and bustle of our day-to-day activities. Take a few moments each day, or at least a few times a week, to monitor the condition of your nails the color, the texture, the appearance of ridges or white marks.

Make a greater effort to take good care of your nails, and you will be thrilled with the way they complement your wardrobe and your own personal style. Consider the following tips as a way to enhance the health and quality of your nails.

Great, Healthy Nails

Apply speed-dry nail polish when time is of the essence.

Drink lots of water. Keep your body hydrated everyday to maintain healthy nails.

Fortify your diet with FDA approved vitamins or supplements. Your fingernails count on you to be responsible with your health and your diet. Unless instructed otherwise by your physician, increase your daily doses of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, calcium, folic acid, protein, Vitamin B12, and zinc.

Touch up your manicure on a daily basis to prevent chips and cracks.

Your nails depend on you to maintain a healthy diet. Take in lots.

Nail polish tips:

Finish with a clear topcoat to add gloss and sheen.

Start with a base coat to strengthen and protect the nails.

Store nail polish in the refrigerator to maintain a smooth consistency.

Try not to store nail polish in a room that becomes cold. The nail polish bottles may break without warning, leaving you with a big mess.

To avoid breaking nails or brittle nails:

Avoid using your nails as tools. This means no picking, scratching, digging, pinching, etc. You know who you are!

Increase the amount of calcium in your diet.

Use products containing alcohol, especially perfumed lotions, sparingly. These items can make nails prone to breaking.

Wear rubber gloves when you do chores that involve continual submersion in water or contact with harsh detergents or chemicals.

How To Waxing Eyebrow

Eyebrow Waxing
By Joanne Elliott

Unless you have very sensitive skin, waxing is a quick and relatively easy alternative to plucking your eyebrows. Although it is generally best to get eyebrows waxed professionally it can be expensive - up to around $15 as a general rule, although salons do differ. If you have a tighter budget, or if you are feeling fairly brave, here are some simple steps for you to try at home...

1) Preparing the Eyebrow

Brush the eyebrow into place with a baby toothbrush or clean mascara wand, so that their natural shape is neatly defined. Next, apply an astringent such as witch hazel to anesthetize the sensitive skin under the brow. Work out your natural brow shape by standing several feet away from a mirror, and following these simple steps

Working out the length of the eyebrow

Hold a ruler parallel to your nose, and level with the inner corner of the eye, to work out where the brow should begin. If your eyes are close together, make the gap between the brows wider. If your eyes are far apart, dont wax the start line of the brow too much so that they are closer together. Mark the correct point with a dot.

Working out the curve of the eyebrow

You can work out where the highest point of the curve/ arch should be by holding a ruler from the edge of the nostril past the outer edge of the iris (the colored part of the eye) and up to the eyebrow. Mark the spot with a dot.

Final planning

Now link up the dots in a gentle arch to draw on the ideal shape of the eyebrow that you want to achieve. This will give you a guideline to go by when applying the wax. You should aim for a smooth arched brow that tapers slightly at the outer ends.

2) Applying the Wax

Buy a professional waxing kit - basically a jar or tub of wax which can be warmed up in boiling water and applied with a small applicator or spatula, and (usually muslin) removal strips. Each product varies slightly, so be sure to read the manufacturers directions carefully.

Warm up the wax to optimum temperature and use the small spatula to apply a thin layer of wax to the growth. Make sure that you only use a small amount of wax on the spatula to avoid the wax dripping when it is applied. Apply wax with the hair growth under the eyebrow, (i.e. in the same direction that the hair grows in). You dont need to use much, and you should not let the wax dry.

3) Removing the Hair

This is the painful bit! Ouch!!

Never wax above the eyebrow, only ever shape from below. Waxing from under the brow will widen your eyes and help to get the line even. This will make you look younger and much more glamorous if done correctly! As soon as it is applied remove the wax against the hair growth, (i.e. in the opposite direction that the hair grows in). This is done by gently smoothing a piece of cotton muslin over the waxed area, pulling the skin taut with one hand, and pulling the muslin off with the other.

It is a good idea to take a little hair off at a time, especially if you have fairly this growth. You will be surprised how much difference a little hair removal will make to your appearance.

4) The Aftermath

Any straggly hairs left over after waxing can be easily plucked out using a set of good tweezers. Apply a soothing balm like tea tree oil onto the area afterwards. You should avoid direct sunlight, acid based facial treatments, and liquid makeup for several hours.

To give the gorgeous new eyebrow shape emphasis, use an eyebrow pencil or tinted brow shadow to subtly fill in any gaps, and even out the natural color tone. Dont worry if you make mistakes, even if you have bald patches or empty spaces. Practice makes perfect, and anyway, the hair will have grown back before you know it

Removing Eye Makeup

It is important for the health of your skin to remove any makeup before going to bed each night. Leaving makeup on your skin overnight can clog your pores, leading to acne. It's part of proper skin care to clean the makeup off of your face each night. Leaving eye makeup on overnight can result in the makeup getting into your eye, causing irritation and possibly infection. Removing eye makeup can be one of the more tricky areas of the face, as the skin around your eyes is the most sensitive. You can buy eye makeup remover from the store, or you can make your own homemade eye makeup remover. Below are a variety of product suggestions along with eye makeup tips and instructions on how to use each.

1. Olive Oil. Olive oil is an excellent, natural way to remove eye makeup and to condition the lashes.
Directions: Soak a cotton ball with olive oil and wipe over eye area to remove makeup. Remove excess olive oil with a warm, damp washcloth. For a more luxurious experience, slightly warm the olive oil before applying.
2. Vaseline. Vaseline has also traditionally been used to remove eye makeup. Like olive oil, the cost is low and it's a natural eye makeup remover so it should be gentle on your skin.
Directions: Apply a small amount over the eye area using your fingers. Use a damp, warm wash cloth to remove the Vaseline and eye makeup. Eye makeup comes off quickly and easily using this method
# Cold Cream. There are a variety of cold cream products that thoroughly remove eye makeup and condition the surrounding skin.
Directions: Apply cold cream to eye area with you fingers, then use a damp, warm washcloth to remove both the cold cream and eye makeup.
# Disposable, pre-moistened eye makeup remover towelettes are the quickest and most convenient way to remove eye makeup. No water or additional towels are necessary when using these. They are also convenient to pack for overnight trips.
Directions: Simply wipe the eye area with the pre-moistened towelette to remove makeup.
# Sensitive Skin. Baby shampoo or baby oil works wonderfully to remove eye makeup, to condition lashes, and is gentle on sensitive skin.
Directions: Eye makeup techniques will vary slightly for sensitive skin. Soak a cotton ball with either baby shampoo or baby oil, apply to the eye area, and then rinse the area using a damp, warm washcloth. Remember to be very gentle when rubbing off the makeup.

How to Remove Pimple Marks

Pimples occur when excess sebum* and dead skin cells clog the sebaceous gland. The sebaceous gland is usually located under the skin connected to hair follicles (except when it opens directly to the skin, primarily around the corners of the mouth and parts of the reproductive system). This gland has cells that secrete fatty materials that accumulate, making the cells swell and burst. The mixture of fatty material and cellular debris is called "sebum". Sebum is secreted into the hair follicles, keeping the hair and skin soft, supple, and waterproof. Pimples and blackheads are created when excess sebum is produced and the gland is clogged. Certain bacteria thrive in this mess, signaling the immune system to attack, which causes inflammation and redness (a pimple). And just for clarification, pimples are NOT caused by eating too many chocolate or greasy foods.

How to Remove Pimple Marks from the Face

Dermabrasion is the method of shedding the top layers of skin using an apparatus that resembles a sandblaster. The method physically sheds scar tissue with the intention of giving it a fresher appearance. The technique works best on superficial scarring.

Depressed ice pick scars and deep pimple scars on your face demand a different treatment. Not only do dermabrasion patients need up to two months of recovery time due to burning and irritation but also dermabrasion does not exhilarate the synthesis of collagen and elastin components in the scar site. In order to completely fill in sunken acne scars, new skin elements must be sparked by some source.

How To Care Your Teeth

Dentists say that the most important part of tooth care happens at home. Brushing and flossing properly, along with regular dental checkups, can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

If you're like most people, you don't exactly look forward to facing a dentist's drill. So wouldn't it be better to prevent cavities before they begin?

Giving Plaque the Brush-Off

To prevent cavities, you need to remove plaque, the transparent layer of bacteria that coats the teeth. The best way to do this is by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Brushing also stimulates the gums, which helps to keep them healthy and prevent gum disease. Brushing and flossing are the most important things that you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Toothpastes contain abrasives, detergents, and foaming agents. Fluoride, the most common active ingredient in toothpaste, is what prevents cavities. So you should always be sure your toothpaste contains fluoride.

About 1 person in 10 has a tendency to accumulate tartar quickly. Tartar is plaque in a hardened form that is more damaging and difficult to remove. Using anti-tartar toothpastes and mouthwashes, as well as spending extra time brushing the teeth near the salivary glands (the inside of the lower front teeth and the outside of the upper back teeth) may slow the development of new tartar.

If you have teeth that are sensitive to heat, cold, and pressure, you may want to try a special toothpaste for sensitive teeth. But you'll still need to talk to your dentist about your sensitivity because it may indicate a more serious problem, such as a cavity or nerve inflammation (irritation).

What is Ayurveda

What is Ayurveda? It is an ancient system of medicine developed in our part of the world, long before the father of medicine, Hippocrates, was even born. The name comes from two conjoined Sanskrit words 'Ayuh' (life) and 'Veda'(science or knowledge). Basically a science of healthy living, Ayurveda has two aims to preserve health and to cure a body afflicted by disease.

One of the fundamental beliefs of Ayurveda is the doctrine of 'Tri Dosha' or the Three Vital Forces 'Vayu, Pita and Kapha'. Generally translated into Wind, Bile and Phlegm, a more accurate interpretation of Vayu is the transmission of energy within the body; in modern medical terms, nerve impulses, muscle contraction and hormonal activity. 'Pita' may not be confined to bile but signifies the whole scope of metabolism and internal heat production while 'Kapha' means mucus, often described as 'The Protective Fluid'. The modern concept of mucus as an antibody containing liquid which coats and protects internal linings of the body, seems to fit in with Ayurvedic thinking.

How to Get Rid of Pimples

As opposed to the advice about getting rid of acne, how to get rid of pimples poses a different sort of problem. Though acne and pimples are pretty much the same thing, the former being the most common medical term for the latter, pimples themselves can be controlled without the aid of medications provided by your doctor. The advice that follows is for the person who gets the occasional pimple. If you're having serious problems with acne, you should probably check out the article about how to treat acne. So, for the occasional pimple, this is what you should do.

Don't pop that pimple right away.
Popping a pimple prematurely, before you can see the puss about to burst the skin, can cause a mild skin infection, a cyst (by pushing the infection further down into the pore), or even worse, a terrible scar. Wait until you can see the yellow puss about to break through the skin.

Prepare for a small surgical pimple removing procedure.
You'll need a small sewing needle, a bottle of alcohol, some gauze (or a small band-aid), and some warm water. Some people think you'll need to run a needle through a flame. This isn't Dr. Quinn Medicine woman. Rubbing alcohol will do.

Wash your face and hands before attempting to pop the pimple.
Washing your face and hands ensures that all makeup, oils, germs and bacteria are no longer near the pimple you're about to burst. Also, dip a majority of the needle in the alcohol, and for safe measure apply some of that alcohol to your fingers and the pimple--dabbing with some gauze to dry the area.
