Sarah Michelle Gellar looks tired as she juggles her new role as a working mother

Tiring work: Sarah Michelle Gellar looks weary as she carries her daughter Charlotte on set of The Ringer in New York

Since becoming a first-time mother, actress Sarah Michelle Gellar has taken a step back from the spotlight.

But as she prepares to return to the small-screen in new TV show The Ringer, it looks like the strain of balancing motherhood and work is starting to show.

The former Buffy The Vampire Slayer star, 33, looked tired as she carried her 18-month-old daughter Charlotte on location in New York yesterday.

Cosy: Mother and daughter looked comfortable in their similar ensembles of cardigans, jeggings and boots

With her hair tied back, Gellar looked cosy in a grey cardigan, jeggings and Ugg boots, while her daughter was dressed in a similar combination of clothes.

Perhaps feeling the strain of long filming days and looking after a toddler, the actress understandably looked far from her usual bubbly self.

New CBS show The Ringer stars Gellar as a troubled woman on the run who is living the life of her richer twin sister.

Gellar's casting in The Ringer comes two years after her last film role Veronika Decides To Die, which was released in some European countries.

Handsome couple: Gellar and husband Freddie Prinze Jnr

However, it is believed the film - adapted from Paulo Coelho's novel of the same name - will be released in the U.S. this year.

But things take a sinister turn when she find out her sibling's life also has a bounty on it.

Although she lives in California with actor husband Freddie Prinze Jnr, Gellar has temporarily relocated to Manhattan for her new TV role.

Gellar and Prinze Jnr had been married for seven years when they became parents, leaving them subjected to pressure from people asking why they hadn't had a baby sooner.

However, Gellar said: 'I always say, the minute you start dating someone, people ask, "When are you getting engaged?"

'And the minute you get engaged, they ask, "When are you getting married?" And then the minute you get married, they ask, "When are you having a baby?"
